Christmas Day was almost at an end, and her Barbie house sat in the corner of her bedroom, the doll reclining in her bed, just like Leeanne.

A scraping sound, then a muffled curse—“Shit!”—and Dillon appeared on the front porch roof, staring in through the window. She squashed down a screech, her tummy tightening. The soft glow of her lamp on her chest of drawers beneath the window highlighted him. Breath held, heart thundering, she stared at the leering face of her tormentor, his exhalations fogging the glass. He moved his head away and wrote in the condensation: LET ME IN. It was backwards, but she knew what it said.

She shook her head, drawing the cover up her face to just below her eyes, peering over it. He pressed the window, then again, jimmying it, and the stupid loose catch slipped away…

Leeanne rushed out of bed and ran towards him. Dillon had opened it wide, his head sticking in, his grin vile, and she reached out and touched his head and pushed and…

He fell backwards, crying out. A dull thud filtered up. She moved the lamp across and clambered onto the drawers, leaning over the sill. Beyond the arched ledge of the porch, the top half of his body was just about visible in the gloom. He must have twisted mid-flight, as he’d landed on his front, one of his arms at a strange angle. Light spilt from the front door, and Maggie appeared at his side and hunkered down, turning her head to look up at Leeanne. She waved her hand in a shooing motion, and Leeanne closed the window, drawing the curtains, blocking out the wonderful sight.

She hoped Dillon was dead.
